Duxbury, MA

FORCIBLE ENTRY OPERATIONS

On Saturday 5/15 & Sunday 5/16/2010, we conducted an open enrollment Forcible Entry Operations course hosted by the Duxbury Fire Department in Duxbury, MA.

This class was held at a city-owned retirement facility, and probably one of the most elegant places that we have had as a venue for this course.

Over the course of the two days, 80 members were in attendance from 26 fire departments across 2 states. Massachusetts fire departments in attendance were: Boston, Hingham, Hanson, Norwell, Weymouth, Bridgewater, Cohasset, Lexington, Melrose, Billerica, Mashpee, Marblehead, Hanover, Whitman, Pembroke, Needham, Chelmsford, Cambridge, Brookline, Scituate, Yarmouth and Duxbury.

Additionally we had members from three departments from Rhode Island (Jamestown, West Warwick and Cumberland) also in attendance.

Bowling Green, OH - BGSU State Fire School

STREET-SMART ENGINE & LADDER COMPANY OPERATIONS

On Monday 5/10 until Friday 5/15, we had 35 members from departments across Ohio and Indiana for the Bowling Green University State Fire School. This course was entitled "Street-Smart Engine and Ladder Company Operations".

While this course was not a Brotherhood Instructors event per say, several of our instructors were present, and presented materials and techniques as we do in our courses. If anyone has taken our FDIC: Truck Essentials course, or will be taking our course in July in Bensenville, Illinois, those classes are very similar.

Keeping to our tradition. If you have a vacant or vacants we can put together some very comprehensive training for you and your surrounding departments.

Day #1: Engine Operations:

Members learned/reinforced the following operations: Aggressive 2 1/2 inch attack line, 1 3/4 inch attack line, stretching preconnected hose lines, estimating long stretches, well-hole stretches, exterior alternatives for stretching, static hose beds, thinking beyond the preconnect. Members were also taken through aerial ladder set-up and several skills as an introduction to ladder company operations.

Day #2: Ladder Company Operations

Consisted of skills and techniques in the following topics: forcible entry, portable ladders and primary search skills.

Day #3: Ladder Company Operations
Consisted of skills and techniques in the following topics: Peaked-Roof Operations, Flat-Roof Operations, Vent, Enter & Search Operations and Forcible Entry Power Saws

FORCIBLE ENTRY - TRAIN-THE-TRAINER

On Thursday 4/29/2010 and Monday 5/3/2010 we conducted an 8-hour Forcible Entry Train-the-Trainer for several members of the Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services Training Staff and several training officers of other surrounding departments.

Each day 20 members were trained on various aspects of forcible entry, so that they could then train their members. The Mississauga FES is a 700 member department, and Canada's 6th largest city.

This was Day #1 of a two-day class for the Durham College Pre-Service Firefighter Program in Whitby, Ontario. Over the course of the two days, 78 firefighters were trained in all disciplines of our Basic Forcible Entry Operations.

Most firefighters in Ontario must pay for and provide their own basic firefighter training prior to being hired on full-time or part-time departments. We were hired to teach the forcible entry portion of their basic firefighter training.

On Saturday December 5th, 2009, we conducted a "Back to Basics: Engine Company Operations" for the Northeast Fire Training Association in Dutchess County, NY. The class was held at the Dutchess County Training Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.

FIRE CHIEF'S ASSOCIATION TRAINING WEEKEND

On Saturday 10/03/2009 and Sunday 10/04/2009, we conducted a Combined Operations hands-on course for the Lancaster-Alden Fire Chief's Association held at the Twin District's firehouse in Lancaster, NY.

The class consisted of 21 members from 4 area departments. Departments in attendance were: Crittenden, Twin District, Depew and Millgrove Volunteer Fire Companies.

Rotations:
Vent, Enter & Search (VES): VES concepts, myths, realities and appropriate instances where VES may be applicable were discussed. All members then had an opportunity to perform at least one VES entry and conduct a search in a zero-visibility environment.

RIT/FAST Removal and Packaging Techniques: ALL members participated in discussions and demonstrations on packaging methods for removing downed firefighters. Members practiced these techniques by extricating and removing firefighters from various scenarios.

Conventional Forcible Entry: All members received instruction on the systematic steps of conventional forcible entry. Each member then forced an inward opening door and an outward opening door.

Scenarios:
Two scenarios encompassing all of the skills learned (and more) were presented in the afternoon of each day. Members forced entry to gain access, conducted searches, managed and mitigated "maydays" for lost firefighters, removed unconscious firefighters, conducted VES and extricated a firefighter trapped in a collapse.
